An honest BPM finder and key detector

This one is built the other way around: the tempo finder always shows the half or double-time alternate, the key checker always shows the relative key, and both carry a confidence rating calibrated against a public test set. When a track changes tempo or is mastered off A440 tuning, the analyzer says so instead of averaging the truth away.

How do I find the key of a song?
- The fastest way is an automatic key finder: drop the audio file into the analyzer at the top of this page and it reads the key, its Camelot code and the BPM in a few seconds, free, without uploading anything (as of August 2026 it handles MP3, WAV, AAC, M4A and, depending on browser, FLAC, ALAC and OGG). To find the key by ear instead, hum the note the song keeps coming home to, find that note on an instrument, then check whether the major or the minor scale built on it fits the melody.
How can I tell what key a song is in?
- Listen for the tonic: the note that feels like home, the one the melody keeps resolving to, often the bass note of the final chord. If that note is C and the song feels bright, it is in C major; if it feels darker, it is likely A minor, the relative key built from the same notes. To confirm your ear, run the track through a key detector like the one on this page: as of 2026 chromagram-based detection is right about three times out of four, so read the confidence rating and the relative-key alternate as part of the answer, not fine print.
What BPM is this song?
- BPM means beats per minute: count the beats in 15 seconds and multiply by four for a rough answer. For an exact one, drop the file into the BPM analyzer on this page and read the decimal BPM along with its half or double-time alternate, or, when the song is playing somewhere else, tap along on the tap tempo page. For reference, as of 2026 most house sits around 120 to 128 BPM, hip hop around 80 to 100, and drum and bass around 170 to 175.
How accurate is the key and BPM analysis?
- Honest answer: no automatic key detector is perfect, and we do not claim to be. Chromagram-based key detection is right roughly three times out of four across real-world material, which is why every result shows a confidence rating and the most likely alternate reading instead of pretending to certainty. BPM detection is stronger, and we show decimal BPM with the half or double-time alternate so the one common failure mode is always visible. We publish our calibration methodology rather than a marketing number.
Are my audio files uploaded anywhere?
- No. The analysis engine runs inside your browser on your own machine, in a background worker. Your audio never leaves your device, and there is no server that could receive it.
What audio formats are supported?
- Whatever your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, and AAC or M4A work everywhere; FLAC and OGG work in Chrome, Firefox and Edge; Safari reads FLAC and ALAC but not OGG. If a file cannot be decoded you get a clear error, never a wrong answer.
Is there a file size or track limit?
- No hard limit on either. Files are downmixed immediately after decoding to keep memory low, and a folder of tracks is analyzed one at a time so even large batches stay smooth.
What is a Camelot key?
- A Camelot key (also called a Camelot code) is a DJ-friendly renaming of a musical key, arranged so compatible keys sit next to each other: a number from 1 to 12 plus B for major or A for minor. C major is 8B and A minor is 8A. Tracks mix harmonically when their Camelot keys share a number or sit one step apart, which turns key matching into simple arithmetic.
Why do different tools disagree about the key?
- Most often because of relative keys: C major and A minor contain exactly the same notes, and a detector has to judge which note feels like home. Different tools judge differently, which is why we always show the relative-key alternate next to the main answer instead of hiding the ambiguity.
What does the confidence rating mean?
- Low, medium or high, for the key and the BPM separately. The rating reflects how strongly the analysis agreed across several sampled sections of the track. A low-confidence result is a prompt to trust your ears, not a number dressed up as certainty.
Why does the BPM show a half or double alternate?
- Tempo has a natural octave ambiguity: a 174 BPM drum and bass track can honestly be felt at 87. Detectors sometimes land on the wrong side, so we always show both readings and let the one that matches how you count take over.
Does it work with ad blockers?
- Yes. There are no ads, no trackers and no third-party scripts to block: the analysis engine is served from this site itself. Turning your ad blocker off is never required.
